When God Was Stunned

Have you ever wondered if anything ever takes God by surprise? It’s kind of hard to imagine isn’t it? Of course for a God who knows everything (omniscient), can do anything (omnipotent), and is everywhere (omnipresent) it would be very difficult to shock or surprise.

Imagine all that He has witnessed.

  • The Creation of the universe and all that is in it.
  • The rise and fall of Lucifer aka Satan – His favorite angel
  • The fall of Adam and Eve – the crown jewel of all His creation
  • The righteousness of Noah in the midst of great evil and spiritual darkness
  • The faithfulness of His friend, Abraham, who trusted in the word of the Lord
  • The doubt of Israel, while in the wilderness, in the word of the Lord after being delivered from Egypt
  • The love and devotion of David, the man after God’s own heart
  • Three Hebrew boys standing tall when everyone else was bowing to an idol

There is no excuse he has not heard:

  • You gave me the woman.
  • I was tricked.
  • Am I my brother’s keeper?
  • Who will know?
  • The preacher was late.
  • We are only grasshoppers.
  • I can’t talk real well.
  • I don’t want to do it!

And yet, NOT ONE of the things listed stunned God! In some instances we know He became angry, or happy, and in some manner proud…but never stunned. So what gives? A thesaurus will give you some synonyms for the word “wonder” such as, dumbfounded, awe, to blow one’s mind, knock out, stun, and surprise. In the bible the word “wonder” has shades of several other meanings such as, stun, devastate, stupefy, astonish, destroy, waste and wonder.

Isaiah 59:16 (KJV) - And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor…

The lack of an intercessor stuns the God of the universe!

Have you ever felt devastated, stunned, that all was a waste, or speechless? So has our great, big and glorious God!

Moses, Abraham, David and others interceded for their brethren but their came a time when there was no intercessor, time when God looked for an intercessor, when God looked for something that could not be found.

An intercessor means one who is in such vital contact with God and with his fellowmen that he is like a live wire closing the gap between the saving power of God and the sinful men who have been cut off from that power.

Hannah Hurnard (1905–1990)

Romans 8:26-27 (KJV) - Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Could it be that today, God Almighty might look for an intercessor in your family, city, state or country? Will it be you or I that He sees ready to do his bidding for the souls of mankind? Join with me in maintaining a posture of prayer that aims to be ready for the time that God looks for an intercessor so that He will be pleased and His desire for harvesters in the great field of lost souls will be fulfilled!
